Child in Need of Services (CHINS)
There are certain situations in which the State of Indiana may intervene or attempt to intervene into your family through the Department of Child Services. In Indiana, a child under the age of 18, who is alleged to have been neglected or abused is legally referred to as a "Child in Need of Services."
Whenever a CHINS petition has been filed or a child is taken into custody, parents have certain rights throughout the proceedings. It is vital that you as a parent understand these rights and have someone ready and willing to advocate on your behalf.
